Description

Assembling an AI Toolbox: Access-Oriented Approaches to Scholarship and Instruction

Artificial-intelligence applications are rapidly becoming fixtures in classrooms, labs, and libraries, yet choosing among them—and using them responsibly—can feel overwhelming. This presentation spotlights AI tools already influencing higher education and research, organized around four common barriers that students face: cognitive load, language comprehension, sensory access, and time limitations. For each challenge, attendees will explore several current options—such as executive-function organizers, smart translation aids, caption generators, and rapid summarizers—and watch demonstrations of a few of the tools in action. Because usefulness hinges on more than features, the session also introduces a helpful evaluation checklist that highlights accessibility (can all learners engage with the tool?), data transparency (how are inputs stored, shared, or reused?), and pedagogical fit (does the tool genuinely advance learning or research goals). We’ll close with a candid look at how ableism and other systemic biases can surface in AI platforms, along with practical strategies for spotting and mitigating these risks. By weaving concrete examples with critical reflection, the session equips instructors, support staff, and researchers to make informed, context-savvy decisions about integrating AI into their teaching and inquiry.
