Description

The UMBC 3-Minute Thesis (3MT®) Competition challenges graduate students to present their research clearly, confidently, and creatively to a non-specialist audience — all using just one slide.

This internationally recognized competition is a great opportunity to sharpen your communication skills, gain feedback, and compete for prizes while representing UMBC on larger stages.


Why Participate?

• Build confidence in public speaking
• Learn how to communicate complex ideas clearly
• Network with fellow graduate researchers
• Compete for cash prizes and certificates
• Winners may represent UMBC at regional and national competitions (with fully funded travel!)


Event Details

Competition Date: Tuesday, April 7, 2026
Location: UC Ballroom
Prizes: 1st Place – $500 | 2nd Place – $350 | and more
Buffet lunch provided

Training Sessions:
Hybrid preparation sessions will be held throughout February and March to help participants prepare their talks.


Who Can Participate?

All UMBC graduate students conducting research are encouraged to register — no prior presentation experience required!
