What Storm, What Thunder Panel Discussion: Community Restoration and Building the Future

Maryland Humanities developed the One Maryland One Book (OMOB) initiative "to bring together diverse people in communities across the state through the shared experience of reading the same book." After all, one of the greatest joys of reading is sharing our favorite books and starting a conversation about the ideas they present.

This year's Maryland One Book is What Storm, What Thunder by Myriam J.A. Chancy, and UMBC has been invited to participate in a statewide conversation of this book. This title explores the impact of a 7.0 earthquake on the intersecting lives of a community in Haiti. Chancy’s What Storm, What Thunder was named a best book of the year by NPR, Kirkus, Library Journal, the Boston Globe, and The Globe and Mail and was awarded the American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation.

Together, the Department of Emergency and Disaster Health Systems, the UMBC Center for Global Engagement, and the Albin O. Kuhn Library and Gallery will be hosting a panel discussion on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM in The Gallery. This event will include snacks, drinks, and an exciting conversation led by Dr. Ellen Kohl in conversation with Faculty and Students from the Department of Emergency and Disaster Health Systems.
